Will translate Latin for food or cash
April 29, 2008It is a common occurence for students to google the answers to our Latin text, Wheelock’s Latin. Obviously this is a time and effort saving shortcut or cheat, with so many doing so that our professor resignedly accepts it.
In class yesterday, I couldn’t translate a certain sentence because I just didn’t understand it. The professor was giddy: he asked the rest of the class if they could help me with the answer and they didn’t reply. He took this to mean that they did not google the answer, when it was more likely the case that they were just too reserved or lazy to respond.
Anyway he took out his wallet, broke a 10 into some 1’s after cajoling people for change and passed a dollar to every one in class. Some tried to refuse; he replied that this would demonstrate that they thought themselves above those who had already accepted the dollar. Fools.
I took mine and will have him autograph it on Wednesday. Now that’s a bookmark.
So he thought those who initially refused to take the dollar was because they thought they were above everybody else? Interesting conclusion. Perhaps he did not consider that they refused it because they thought he was too cheap to give out at least a $5?
